Clash over Riparian Reservation Borders

Source: LA Times

The Los Angeles Times has published a fascinating piece about a long-brewing conflicts on the western border of the Colorado River Indian Reservation, which just happens to be…the Colorado River. Does the reservation border move with the river, or should it be a fixed point established at the point of the western bank of the Colorado River in 1876? This has come to conflict as a handful non-Indians have stopped paying rent on their leases of land which lies on the western bank of the river – claiming it isn’t Indian land. Lawsuits are underway.

We have mentioned before a case of what happens when borders, as defined by environmental features, move. The overlay of Native reservation lands and jurisdiction makes this case all the more interesting.
