Indian Heads in SLC

(Photo from www.jaredfarmer.net)

I just moved to Utah about 7 months ago and one of the first things I noticed while walking around downtown Salt Lake City was the usage of Indian Heads on streetlights (see the image at far left, via Jared Farmer). Every time I walk around and see them, I have thought, “I need to go take some pictures and do a post on the history of these.”  Well, it looks like Jared Farmer beat me to it!  Jared offers a few examples,  from around the city. I would like to learn more about the light-pole motif – figure out exactly where/when that comes from.

Read Farmer’s write up here.

While you’re at it, why don’t you go buy his excellent book too:
On Zion’s Mount: Mormons, Indians, and the American Landscape.
