The Great Plains, from a Plane

Slate just posted a great selection of aerial photographs of the Great Plains from photographer Terry Evans.  Beautiful stuff!  My former students in courses on the Great Plains would be quick to notice that Evans extends above the 49 parallel, just as the Plains do (an issue I was always droning on about).  Check it out.

I would take issue with the photograph below, captioned “Where the Prairie Meets the Forest, north of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada, 1996.”  This is not where prairie meets forest, it is where plowed fields meet forest.  the absense of trees does not make something a “prairie.”
